Introduction: The Center for the Promotion of Research Involving Innovative Statistical Methodology at the Steinhardt School of Education has two job openings ! One is for an assistant/associated tenure track position for an applied statistician or psychometrician. The other is for a postdoc in causal inference and sensitivity analysis. Jennifer Hill and Marc Scott at the Steinhardt school are just great! We’re working together on various research projects so if you manage to get one of these jobs maybe you can collaborate with us here at Columbia too. So I have every interest in encouraging the very best people to apply for these jobs.

3 0.18402609 2070 andrew gelman stats-2013-10-20-The institution of tenure

Introduction: Rohin Dhar writes: The Priceonomics blog is doing a feature where we ask a few economists what they think of the the institution of tenure. If you’d be interested in participating, I’d love to get your response. As an economist, what do you think of tenure? Should it be abolished / kept / modified? My reply: Just to be clear, I’m assuming that when you say “tenure,” you’re talking about lifetime employment for college professors such as myself. I’m actually a political scientist, not an economist. So rather than giving my opinion, I’ll say what I think an economist might say. I think an economist could say one of two things: Economist as anthropologist would say: Tenure is decided by independent institutions acting freely. If they choose to offer tenure, they will have good reasons, and it is not part of an economist’s job to second-guess individual decisions. Economist as McKinsey consultant would say: Tenure can be evaluated based on a cost-benefit analysis. How

Introduction: Steve Porter writes with a question about matching for inferences in a hierarchical data structure. I’ve never thought about this particular issue, but it seems potentially important. Maybe one or more of you have some useful suggestions? Porter writes: After immersing myself in the relatively sparse literature on propensity scores with clustered data, it seems as if people take one of two approaches. If the treatment is at the cluster-level (like school policies), they match on only the cluster-level covariates. If the treatment is at the individual level, they match on individual-level covariates. (I have also found some papers that match on individual-level covariates when it seems as if the treatment is really at the cluster-level.) But what if there is a selection process at both levels? For my research question (effect of tenure systems on faculty behavior) there is a two-step selection process: first colleges choose whether to have a tenure system for faculty; then f

Introduction: Two positions open in the statistics group at the NYU education school. If you get the job, you get to work with Jennifer HIll! One position is a postdoctoral fellowship, and the other is a visiting professorship. The latter position requires “the demonstrated ability to develop a nationally recognized research program,” which seems like a lot to ask for a visiting professor. Do they expect the visiting prof to develop a nationally recognized research program and then leave it there at NYU after the visit is over? In any case, Jennifer and her colleagues are doing excellent work, both applied and methodological, and this seems like a great opportunity.

5 0.77153528 2113 andrew gelman stats-2013-11-25-Postdoc position on psychometrics and network modeling

Introduction: Francis Tuerlinckx announces that he and Denny Borsboom have a joint postdoctoral position. It sounds really cool: The position is in the Research Group of Quantitative Psychology and Individual Differences at the University of Leuven (Belgium) and involves frequent travel to and contact with the Psychological Methods group in Amsterdam. The research of the postdoc will be part of a larger program aimed at developing and applying methods for network analysis in psychology and psychopathology (see a recent review on the topic: Borsboom & Cramer, 2013). The specific research topic will depend on the expertise and interest of the candidate, but will involve one or more of the following: Statistical methods for high dimensional data, multilevel modeling, or nonlinear dynamical models. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Francis Tuerlinckx (francis.tuerlinckx@ppw.kuleuven.be) and Denny Borsboom (dennyborsboom@gmail.com) for more information.
