Introduction: As announced earlier , I’ll be putting my Bayesian Data Analysis course on a G+ hangout. It meets each Friday 8h30 Paris time, starting 18 Oct. Just to try things out, I’ll do a mini-hangout tomorrow (Thurs) 8h30. What I’ll do is set up the hangout, then post the url in a new blog post. I’ll then talk for a few minutes. You should be able to click the url into your browser and see me. If this all works, I’ll do the same thing this Friday 8h30, with a new blog post and a new url.

Introduction: Tomorrow (Thurs) 8h30 (Paris time) I will be teaching my Bayesian Data Analysis class (class4a.pdf and class4b.pdf, you can follow the slides here ). We had problems earlier with the regular G+ hangout, so this time we’re trying the G+ On-Air Hangout which I think should work better. I’ll post a blog entry tomorrow with a link to the hangout. Let’s hope for the best!

Introduction: Factual collects data on a variety of topics, organizes them, and allows easy access. If you ever wanted to do a histogram of calorie content in Starbucks coffees or plot warnings with a live feed of earthquake data – your life should be a bit simpler now. Also see DataMarket , InfoChimps , and a few older links in The Future of Data Analysis . If you access the data through the API, you can build live visualizations like this: Of course, you could just go to the source. Roy Mendelssohn writes (with minor edits): Since you are both interested in data access, please look at our service ERDDAP: http://coastwatch.pfel.noaa.gov/erddap/index.html http://upwell.pfeg.noaa.gov/erddap/index.html Please do not be fooled by the web pages. Everything is a service (including search and graphics) and the URL completely defines the request, and response formats are easily changed just by changing the “file extension”. The web pages are just html and javascript that u

Introduction: Here’s the link . When you’re on the hangout, please mute your own microphone! I’ll have the computer point at the blackboard. You can follow along with the slides: for the first hour for the second hour P.S. Apparently there is some limit on number of hangout participants (see comments). I didn’t know about that! Maybe next time will try “on air” hangout, I will have to learn more about this. Next week the teaching asst will do the course so no hangout, then in two weeks there is no class because it’s the day after Halloween and that’s a holiday around here. So we’ll resume this on Fri 8 Nov. See you then! P.P.S. Those of you who were able to join the hangout: Could you please let me know how the visual and sound quality were? Thanks.

Introduction: We’re having a fun discussion this week on invovis vs. statistical graphics. Michael Lavine has contributed a couple of posts. Next week will be our special Joint Statistical Meeting edition: we’ll be having several guest-bloggers post on the interesting and amusing encounters they’ve had each day. Then after that we’ll be moving to monthly theme issues: Each month we’ll solicit several different posts on a particular topic.

3 0.8552494 1843 andrew gelman stats-2013-05-05-The New York Times Book of Mathematics
Introduction: This was an good idea: take a bunch of old (and some recent) news articles on developments in mathematics and related ares from the past hundred years. Fun for the math content and historical/nostalgia value. Relive the four-color theorem, Fermat, fractals, and early computing. I have too much of a technical bent to be the ideal reader for this sort of book, but it seems like an excellent gift for a non-technical reader who nonetheless enjoys math. (I assume that such people are out there, just as there are people like me who can’t read music but still enjoy reading about the subject.) The book is organized by topic. My own preference would have been chronological and with more old stuff. I particularly enjoyed the material from many decades ago, such as the news report on one of the early computers. This must have been a fun book to compile.
