Introduction: Play with your food! Posted: February 14, 2014 | Author: Hilary Mason | Filed under: blog | Tags: data , food | Leave a comment » I spent a few minutes this week putting together a quick script to pull data from the Locu API . Locu has done the hard work of gathering and parsing menus from around the US and has a lot of interesting data (and a good data team ). The API is easy to query by menu item (like “cheeseburger”, my favorite ) and by running my little script I quickly had data for the prices of cheeseburgers in my set of zip codes (the 100 most populated metro areas in the US). I’m a big fan of Pete Warden’s OpenHeatMap tool for making quick map visualizations, and was able to come up with the following: The blue map is the average price of a cheeseburger by zip, with the red one showing the average price of pizza. The most expensive average cheeseburger can be found in Santa Clara, CA, ironically the city currently hosting the Str

Introduction: DataGotham 2013 is coming! Posted: August 12, 2013 | Author: Hilary Mason | Filed under: blog | Tags: datagotham , nyc | Leave a comment » Registration is open for DataGotham 2013 , our second annual New York data community conference, September 12th and 13th. The core of the conference is a series of brilliant data practitioners telling the stories about what they work on. The content is technically-oriented but not all deeply technical, and we really welcome anyone curious about how New York companies and institutions are pushing the boundaries on data to attend. We have two goals for the conference. The primary goal is to connect people in the greater New York data community who are working on interesting things. If our community is strong and supportive, we will all do better work. Our second goal is to highlight the amazing working happening here, so that people near and far will realize that New York is the best place in the world to do data science.

Introduction: Intro to the Linux Command Line Posted: May 4, 2006 | Author: hilary | Filed under: articles , blog | Tags: command line , linux , ssh , tutorial | 2 Comments » This document will step through the process of accessing a Linux server, and several basic commands. SSH We will access the server via the SSH , or “Secure SHell”, protocol. SSH provides encrypted communication between two terminals. It is an alternative to telnet or rlogin. First, make sure that you have an SSH client. If you are running Windows, I highly recommend downloading Putty . Click on the top Windows binary and save it to the desktop. You can run Putty.exe directly, without installing. If you are using OS X, open a terminal and run ‘ssh’. Logging In Type your hostname into the box. You can find your hostname by asking your ISP, but a good bet is that “www.yourdomain.com” will resolve to your server. You may need to request shell access Click open. You’ll be presented

Introduction: Why do I miss google calendar invites? Posted: January 2, 2012 | Author: Hilary Mason | Filed under: blog | Tags: calendar , configuration , google | 2 Comments » I keep missing Google calendar invites on both my personal and work accounts. I’ve had my google account for years (since 2004?) and assumed it was some quirk of how I had configured something along the way. Today I was following Google’s instructions for syncing calendars with an iOS device and discovered that if you click calendar settings (which means click the gear icon then ‘calendar settings’), then ‘calendar’, then ‘notifications’ next to the calendar that you care about, you can turn on e-mail and SMS notifications for any given calendar. (I’ll save my ranting about the number of clicks to find and configuration anything on google’s properties right now for another time.) I’m sharing this on the theory that I’m not the only one with this particular frustration. I hope it saves someon

Introduction: Speaking: Entertain, Don’t Teach Posted: March 17, 2013 | Author: Hilary Mason | Filed under: speaking | Tags: teaching | 7 Comments » It’s tempting to think of a talk as the opportunity to take a body of knowledge and to educate your audience about that body of knowledge. You have something in your head and you want to get it into theirs. Making education your top priority leads to terrible talks, with an unhappy audience that won’t retain any of the information you wanted them to remember, anyway. Instead, think about how you can create a compelling narrative through your material, layering in the deep technical content so that the most attentive listeners will take away a deep understanding while the people who are only half paying attention will, at the very least, enjoy the experience. I can’t think of any talk that demonstrates this better than Gary Bernhardt’s WAT: Remember: you’re entertaining , not educating . This article is part of my
