Introduction: 80 Million Links a Day Don’t Lie: Fast Company interview! Posted: November 6, 2011 | Author: Hilary Mason | Filed under: Media | Tags: fast company , interview , video | 2 Comments » Fast Company came to our office to film a short interview with me. If you’ve been following bitly closely there won’t be any surprises for you here, but I did get to talk about some of the exciting projects that we’re working on. The best part about filming the interview was getting back to my computer after, where my clever co-workers had been silently answering the questions along with me in our chat room — with a lot more snark.

Introduction: Conference: Web2 Expo SF Posted: June 24, 2010 | Author: hilary | Filed under: academics , blog , Presentations | Tags: bitly , conference , data , presentation , realtime , web2expo | 6 Comments » I gave a talk called A Data-driven Look at the Realtime Web Ecosystem at the Web2Expo SF conference in May in San Francisco. I attempted to highlight some of the interesting facets of the bit.ly data set, and it appeared to be well-received (showing up on TechCrunch , ZDNet , and a few other places). I attended the full conference, and it was great. The attendees were extremely international and I met a ton of fascinating people. I’m still getting a couple of e-mail requests per week for my slides and materials, so they’re posted below for posterity. Introduction: NPR: Interview on Science Friday Posted: February 7, 2011 | Author: hilary | Filed under: blog , Media | 3 Comments » On Friday, January 28th I hopped in a cab and went up to NPR’s Bryant Park recording studio for a fifteen minute chat with Ira Flatow , host of Science Friday . I’ve been a big fan of Ira and Science Friday since I discovered the show years ago, and it was a very exciting honor to be a guest. The image at the right is a snapshot I took with my phone while nervously waiting outside the studio. The title of the segment is the rather dramatic Privacy At Stake As Sites Track Online Preferences . Our conversation wound around the issues of tracking user data online, and the potential opportunities and dangers that all users of online services face. NPR has the full broadcast and transcript online . By far the most fun and unexpected aspect of this was the number of people who wrote to me to ask questions or say that they appreciated my

It’s easier than you think! Several people have asked how we did it, so I hope these quick instructions might come in handy. Download, install, and run DarwiinRemote . Turn Bluetooth on on the Macbook. You can do this by opening the Bluetooth Preferences Pane (Apple menu, System Preferences and choose “Bluetooth” under Hardware) and clicking the big “Turn Bluetooth On” button. If Bluetooth is already on, you can skip this step! Hold the Wii-mote in front of the Macbook and press buttons 1 and 2 simultaneously. The LEDs on the Wii-mote will flash. As you move the Wii-mote, you’ll see your movement plotted on the screen, as you see below. Dr

Introduction: An Experience with Using a Wiki for a Collaborative Classroom Documentation Project Posted: October 7, 2007 | Author: hilary | Filed under: blog | Tags: education | 4 Comments » I’m teaching a basic web design course this term that covers design concepts, XHTML , and CSS . The students are from a variety of backgrounds – some have knowledge of HTML, some are non-majors or non-credit students looking to pick up a useful skill, and many are complete beginners who are required to take the course as part of their degree programs. Only a few students knew what a wiki (distinct from Wikipedia ) was before beginning this project. The students were given a month to make their contributions to the wiki . They were each assigned primary responsibility for one page at random, but were graded both on the success of their page and their contributions to other pages. 43 students across two sections of the class participated in the project. Of those, five (or 11
