Introduction: Conference: Web2 Expo SF Posted: June 24, 2010 | Author: hilary | Filed under: academics , blog , Presentations | Tags: bitly , conference , data , presentation , realtime , web2expo | 6 Comments » I gave a talk called A Data-driven Look at the Realtime Web Ecosystem at the Web2Expo SF conference in May in San Francisco. I attempted to highlight some of the interesting facets of the bit.ly data set, and it appeared to be well-received (showing up on TechCrunch , ZDNet , and a few other places). I attended the full conference, and it was great. The attendees were extremely international and I met a ton of fascinating people. I’m still getting a couple of e-mail requests per week for my slides and materials, so they’re posted below for posterity. The slides: A Data-driven Look at the Realtime Web View more presentations from Hilary Mason . And the video: As always, I welcome your questions or comments.

This is a 2 hour and 43 minute instructional video that walks you through basic machine learning algorithms, first theoretically and mathematically, and then with Python example code (which is available here ). This video is an instructional take and builds on the material I covered in my Strange Loop 2010 keynote Machine Learning: A Love Story and the Data Bootcamp I did with Joe Adler, Drew Conway, and Jake Hofman at the Strata Conference in February. I’d also like to acknowledge the many collaborators, colleagues, and friends who have made definite contributions to my thinking about this material and how best to pres

Introduction: Help, I’m the first data scientist at my company! Posted: September 21, 2012 | Author: Hilary Mason | Filed under: blog | Tags: datagotham , datascience , panel , presentations | 2 Comments » I moderated a panel at DataGotham  with Adam Laiacano from Tumblr ,  Fred Benenson from Kickstarter , and  Roberto Medri from Etsy  about being the first data scientist at a company. We covered everything from what people’s job responsibilities are, the tools they use, successes, failures, how they are integrated into an organization, and how they have hired other data scientists to join them. The panelists were concise, articulate, and intelligent. Watch it below!

Introduction: Getting Started with Data Science Posted: December 28, 2012 | Author: Hilary Mason | Filed under: blog | Tags: advice , datascience , hacking , learning | 18 Comments » I get quite a few e-mail messages from very smart people who are looking to get started in data science. Here’s what I usually tell them: The best way to get started in data science is to DO data science! First, data scientists do three fundamentally different things: math , code (and engineer systems), and communicate . Figure out which one of these you’re weakest at, and do a project that enhances your capabilities. Then figure out which one of these you’re best at, and pick a project which shows off your abilities. Second, get to know other data scientists! If you’re in New York, try the DataGotham events list to find some meetups, and make sure to stay for the beers. Look for groups, like DataKind , that need data skills put to work for good. No matter how much of a beginner

Introduction: DataGotham 2013 is coming! Posted: August 12, 2013 | Author: Hilary Mason | Filed under: blog | Tags: datagotham , nyc | Leave a comment » Registration is open for DataGotham 2013 , our second annual New York data community conference, September 12th and 13th. The core of the conference is a series of brilliant data practitioners telling the stories about what they work on. The content is technically-oriented but not all deeply technical, and we really welcome anyone curious about how New York companies and institutions are pushing the boundaries on data to attend. We have two goals for the conference. The primary goal is to connect people in the greater New York data community who are working on interesting things. If our community is strong and supportive, we will all do better work. Our second goal is to highlight the amazing working happening here, so that people near and far will realize that New York is the best place in the world to do data science.
